Gorak Shep or Gorekshep, one of the popular stops in the Everest region, is the nearest Everest Base Camp settlement. Located at a rising altitude of 5,154m, Gorak Shep is not a typical settlement like other villages in the Everest Region. It is more like a seasonal settlement where people settle during bearable seasons like Autumn and Spring only. Life in the village during Monsoon and Winter is quite tricky due to the rainfall and heavy snowfall. That is why you will see crowds around the settlement in Autumn and Spring and fewer people during other seasons.
Being at the trail to Everest Base Camp Trek, there are teahouses in good numbers. Locals, mainly Sherpas, run those lodges(teahouses) to provide food and lodging to the Everest Base Camp Trek doers. Trekkers arrive in Gorak Shep after trekking all the way from Lukla, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Pangboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche. The Everest Base Camp is in the distance of 2 to 3 hours away from Gorak Shep.
Even if they want to explore Kala Patthar(5,550m) or any other near mountain passes, Gorak Shep is the place to reach out at last. The teahouses in Gorak Shep have good facilities, and people can also get access to the Internet. That is why Gorak Shep is famous as the rest station for both ascenders and descenders of Everest Base Camp. Either you are going towards the base camp or falling back; you can have a convenient rest time in this settlement.
However, Gorak Shep is not a safe place for those highly prone to mountain sickness. With a height of above 5000m, the oxygen level is quite thicker than the lower region in this village. Anyone from the lower area can suffer the symptoms of the sickness. Especially the novice trekkers are more open to the illness than the experienced. If a person gets any sickness symptoms like headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, it is better to descend to the lower region ASAP for treatment.
